Trump's Homeland Secretary gets blasted on Capitol Hill for lying about border policy (VIDEO)
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is having a tough time on Capitol Hill right now.
She faced a barrage of criticism from House Democrats on Thursday, the same day Trump is threatening to shutdown the government over lack of funding for his $5 billion border wall.
One moment that caught everyone's attention was when Nielsen was condemned by Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, who called the DHS chief a liar, as she defended the administration's policy of separating children from their parents at the Mexican border.
It was a pretty heated exchange.
"It is as if you can’t see the reality of modern immigration or contributions of anyone who came from countries other than Norway or other parts of Europe. It’s as if you and the Trump administration are blind," he said. "Shame on everybody that separates children and allows them to stay at the other side of the border fearing death, fearing hunger, fearing sickness. Shame on us for wearing our badge of Christianity during Christmas for allowing the secretary to come here and lie."
The congressman also accused Nielsen of agreeing with Fox News' Tucker Carlson, who is facing advertiser backlash on his show after saying poor immigrants were bringing dirt into the country.
"You know what? It seems like you agree with Tucker Carlson, that immigrants only bring danger, and dirt, and division," he fired off at her.
The Homeland Secretary also had no answer for why her administration was trying to get money for a wall that the president claimed Mexico would pay for.
Here's what Congressman Hakeem Jeffries asked her: "If Mexico is supposed to pay for the border wall, why is the Trump administration and your department of Homeland Security petitioning Congress for 5 billion dollars in American taxpayer money to pay for that same wall?"
